Imagine this. You have a big important event coming up in the next 2-3 days. You’re all excited and have already picked out what you’re going to wear. You’ve been waiting for this for months. As the day approaches you get more and more excited.
The day before you wake up and look into the mirror. You want to scream………..
What do you see? A bright red monster of a pimple staring back to you.
You want to yell……….
Why today? You ask.
The first impulse is to touch it and squeeze it. To get it off your face somehow!!
Whatever you do, never act on this impulse. Squeezing is the worst thing you could do unless you want to go to your event with an even bigger spot on your face. Only now it might be bleeding and a bloody scab would have formed on it. Not a pretty picture is it?
So how do you make this spot go away faster? Enter acne spot treatments. These are generally applied only to the place on your face where you have acne. The reason they are applied to just the spot is that they might be a bit stronger than other treatments that you can apply all over your face. Acne spot treatments are generally applied at night so they have a chance to work while you sleep.
There are a lot of acne spot treatments available in the market. However before using any of these, remember that the active ingredients in these commercially available spot treatments are either benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulphur. All these are drying to the skin. That is how they work, they dry out the acne. What happens then, is that the skin around the spot you have treated gets all flaky, white and dry. The dry skin looks somewhat like white scales. Not at all what you want.
So here are some acne spot treatments that are guaranteed to do the job without damaging or drying out your skin.
These treatments are safe to use overnight. But please be sure to do a patch test beforehand in case of any adverse reaction.
1. Arukah Anti Acne Gel
Arukah was founded by Dr.Oliva DSouza in January 2017. This is anti-acne spot treatment is her latest offering.
Here is what she has to say about this
It is 100% natural with no synthetic chemicals or preservatives. Made with certified organic aloe vera gel and a blend of essential oils like lavender, tea tree and lemongrass. It zaps the zit and dries it up before it can flare up. To be used twice a day on the zit. It is freshly handcrafted before dispatch. 2. Ginger Juice
Ginger is anti-inflammatory. It is also a powerful antioxidant. It also kills acne-causing bacteria. Ginger contains chemicals which relieve the swelling, inflammation and irritation caused by acne. This makes it an ideal spot treatment for acne.
Ginger also contains Vitamin C which helps with acne scars. So in addition to healing your acne quickly, you can be sure that you won’t be left with a scar once the acne heals.
To use ginger as a spot treatment, grate a little bit of ginger. Squeeze out the juice and apply it on the acne with clean fingers. You can also grind about 200 grams of ginger in a blender with some water and extract the juice using a sieve. This juice can be kept in a bottle in the refrigerator to use as an acne spot treatment when needed.
3. Turmeric
Turmeric can be used in a face mask and also as a spot treatment. It is anti-inflammatory and a powerful antioxidant.
Most people avoid turmeric due to the fact that it can stain your skin yellow. However, turmeric can also be used as a spot treatment. Brew yourself a cup of green tea. Take a couple of pinches of turmeric depending on how many spots you want to treat. Use as many drops of t the tea as required to make a thick paste.
Using a cotton bud apply the paste on the areas to be treated. Drink the green tea while the turmeric dries on your face. This will help heal breakouts faster as well.
Once the paste dries you can let it stay on overnight. Make sure you spread a towel over your pillow.
4. Mint Leaves or Mint Juice
Mint leaves contain salicylic acid which is an active ingredient in many acne products and acne spot treatments. It helps remove dead skin cells. Mint leaves also contain antioxidants which help skin heal. Mint also contains Vitamin C which means the acne will heal without leaving a scar.
Crush a few mint leaves. Do not use water as the leaves will release liquid when crushed. Apply the paste on the acne and let it dry.
Let this remain on your face overnight.
You can also use mint juice. Grind 2-3 handfuls of freshly picked, cleaned and washed mint leaves in a blender or food processor using as little water as possible. Put this paste into a sieve. Use a spoon or your hand to extract the juice from the paste. Store this juice in a clean glass bottle in the refrigerator and use when needed on the spots.
5. Neem Leaves
Neem has a lot of medicinal properties. It is used in food as well as in medicine. In South India, a rasam ( watery soup ) is made using the neem flower. In some regions of Bengal, just before the monsoon season, people eat a vegetable dish made with the tender neem leaves. The anti-bacterial properties of neem help prevent colds and other illnesses throughout the wet season when germs tend to spread very quickly.
You can harness those same anti-bacterial properties to help heal your acne faster. Crush a few tender neem leaves. Do not use any water. Apply the paste on the areas of your face that need to be treated. Let it dry before you go to sleep.
If you can’t get fresh neem leaves you can use neem powder. Just take a little neem powder and make a thick paste with water. Apply this paste on your spots. Let it dry before you sleep.
6. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil when used properly makes an excellent spot treatment. It is anti-inflammatory which means it helps reduce the swelling and the redness that comes with acne.
Please do not use tea tree oil all over your face. Also never apply tea tree oil directly to your face. Some skins do not tolerate tea tree oil very well. You may break out in hives or your skin might turn red. Trust me this will be worse than having just having acne on your face.
Mix a drop of tea tree oil with about a teaspoon of pure aloe vera gel and use this as a spot treatment. Apply it only on the acne and resist the urge to slather it all over your face. You can use just pure aloe vera gel all over your face.
Never use this tea tree and aloe gel more than once a day. In fact, this gel is better used every alternate night.
7. Bentonite Clay
Bentonite clay can help heal acne and reduce inflammation, swelling and redness. It is great for acne prone oily skins. However, it can be also be used overnight as a spot treatment.
Take a little clay and using rose water or water make a thick paste. Apply the paste directly on the acne and let it dry before you go to bed. Next morning wash it off.
Arukah also has a great bentonite clay and activated charcoal face mask for oily skin and acne that helps detox and balance the oiliness.

8. Honey
This one is a bit messy so I have saved it for last. It is also one of the most effective acne spot treatments. Honey applied on acne and left overnight can reduce the size, redness and irritation of acne by a lot. However honey being sticky, can leave you with quite a lot of mess in the morning. There are some things you can do though, to minimise the mess.
Use organic and raw honey and apply it to the acne on your face. Apply gently to the acne and the skin surrounding it. Use a bit of tissue or gauze or a cloth face mask to prevent the honey from going all over your face and hair. Tie your hair back so that it does not get stuck to the honey on your face.
Use a towel over your pillow so that if in case the honey rubs off, you can just wash the towel. Try sleeping on your back if you can so as to keep the honey from rubbing off.
So there you have it. 8 acne spot treatments that actually work. Let me know in the comments if you try any of them.

Drinking a lot of water does definitely help your skin but it is not a treatment per se for acne. While drinking water would help you heal faster, it will not work on its own.
